Dr. Dick Kamugasha

Bio

Dr Dick Kamugasha is the Deputy Executive Director at Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI). He holds a Master of Engineering degree in Chemical Engineering and Environmental Technology, attained at the University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology (UMIST), UK (1990-1994); and a Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD) in Chemical Engineering, attained at University College London (UCL), UK (1994-1998). From 1998 to 2005, he worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate and Lecturer at UCL, specializing in the development and commercialization of patented industrial technologies which were transferred for practical applications in a wide range of manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries that included GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca, Unilever, BASF, Lafarge and De Beers. Dr Kamugasha’s work at UCL generated 2 UK Patents, 1 US Patent and 1 Worldwide (PCT) Patent. He has several international publications and has authored the National Intellectual Property (IP) Policy for the Republic of Uganda, the East African Community (EAC) Regional Intellectual Property (IP) Policy and the Africa Continental Guidelines for Institutional Intellectual Property (IP) Policy formulation with support from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Africa Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO). Dr Kamugasha retains extensive experience in: strategic planning; institutional development (he was on the pioneering team that established Uganda Petroleum Institute Kigumba [UPIK] as a special project in 2009); project management; applied research and development; technology development, transfer and adaptation; industrial process design; innovation and intellectual property (IP) management; and consulting.
